Ain’t Burned All the Bright

By Jason Reynolds (Author), Jason Griffin (Illustrator)

An interplay of poetry and art showcases a Black family during the first summer of COVID. In three breaths, the teen narrator describes how his family copes with the challenges of that time.

Notes

From the 2023 Caldecott press release:
A Black family finds it difficult to breathe due to pandemic anxiety and crushing oppression of systemic racism, discovering a lifeline in their connections with one another. Griffin’s mixed-media collage illustrations both capture the tone of the poetic text and invite readers to create personal meanings.
