The Midwife's Apprentice

By Karen Cushman

The central character, Brat, is a homeless waif who first appears sleeping in a dung heap “unwashed, unnourished, unloved, and unlovely. . . .” From a person with no hopes, no dreams, and no expectations she becomes the midwife's apprentice— a person with a name and a place in the world. An excellent portrayal of medieval England.
